The Foundation’s first tour to the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) in August 2019 coincided with the Telstra Indigenous Art Awards held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT, as well as the month long Darwin Festival – so there was a plethora of cultural events and sights to fill our senses on our excursion to the North.
Our tour leader Kate Croll shared many experiences from living and working in Kalumburu WA. Kate was mentor to many artists and worked at the Community Arts Center. Her local contacts and knowledge of culture and art practice was invaluable.
Textiles design and manufacturing by remote indigenous communities is forging ahead generating nationally and international recognition. This was evident at opening night of the Fashion Awards provided an insight into this vibrant and talented industry.
The DAAF showcased the diversity of skilled craftsmanship, art production and dance performance from the Northern Communities and the Tiwi Islands.
A highlight of the tour was our attendance at the Museum and Art Gallery NT for the announcement and celebration of the Telstra Indigenous Art Awards. A truly unique night of entertainment.
The tour was a wonderful introduction to experience the hospitality, strong sense of community and above all the dance and art of the Northern Territory.
The Foundation is looking to run the program in 2020 if there is membership support.
