Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation

“There is a treasure trove of work that is being stored in the vaults of the gallery and it will be a fantastic day when all of those artworks come out into the light. It will be a gift to the nation we can all share.”

The Architects

“The expanded building will provide flexibility for Gallery use now and in the future. The design of the new building, its materials, scale and proportions respect the architecture of the original 1977 Gallery, an innovative building from that time. However, the new building reflects the need for larger and more adaptable spaces to cater for contemporary art and broader Gallery and cultural uses”.

Kerry Clare LFRAIA, Director CLARE DESIGN

Project partners

The Gallery expansion is an investment in the social, cultural and economic life of Newcastle and the Hunter. It is made possible through the support of Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation, City of Newcastle, NSW Government, the Commonwealth Government and our wonderful community.

The transformed Gallery will a place for all

The expansion will see a 250% increase in exhibition space, enabling more of the City’s nationally significant collection to be seen, and will attract new ambitious exhibitions.

New facilities will meet diverse visitor needs. A cafe, terrace and specialty shop will make the Gallery an accessible, thriving hub of activity for locals and visitors alike.

A state-of-the-art multi-purpose education space will host a range of hands-on opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Art lovers across generations can experiment and engage with exhibitions in new ways.
